Introduction

The Partners site is for use by Hounslow teachers, governors, Local Authority staff, Council Members and other educational partners, and is password protected. The Parents/Visitors site is open-access for the wider public but aimed mainly at parents, carers and guardians who have a specific interest in Hounslow. Information aimed directly at pupils is also contained in a section on both sites.

The following points are for users who do not use assistive technology to access the internet. If you do, please visit HVEC's "Accessibility" page, in this section.

Getting About the Site

• There is a navigation column down the left-hand side of the screen with the main sections in the site listed. This should be visible all the time you are in the site.
• If you click on a section title, you will see a home page for that section in the main part of the screen. This outlines the scope and structure of the section. At the same time, in the left-hand column you will see a drop-down list of the subsections in that section. Clicking on a title will take you to that page.
• If the subsection you go to contains more than one page, these further pages are listed near the top of the screen below the subsection title - clicking on a page title takes you to it.
• A bullet Bullet indicates a link to somewhere else.
• There are several buttons that appear near the top of pages, called 'About', 'Contacts', 'Documents', 'Best Practice', 'Updates' and 'Links'. Clicking on them will bring up information related to those titles that is relevant to the page you are on. If a button is faded out, it means there is no material there to see. Clicking 'About' will bring back the main text for that page. The Documents, Best Practice, Updates and inks all open in a new browser window so you can explore them in depth and still get back to HVEC quickly by closing the new window.

About: The main text for the page – shows automatically when you click the link in the menu.
Contacts: CS&LL and any other main contacts for that topic. Only available on the Partners site.
Documents: These supplement the text on the About page and include guidance material, handbooks, classroom materials, procedures, plans, etc. The source of any material (Hounslow or other) is shown in brackets with the date it was published or updated.
Best Practice: Materials that disseminate best practice and innovative practice. The source of any material (Hounslow or other) is shown in brackets with the date it was published.
Updates: Newsletters, bulletins, updates, position papers, minutes of meetings, briefing notes/presentations, reports on events, etc. - any material that is time-related in some way. They include not only Hounslow bulletins, newsletters, meeting minutes, etc. related to the subject of that page but also links to news pages on other relevant websites. These appear at the bottom of the list, while Hounslow updates appear at the top in reverse date order - the most recent first. The source of any material (Hounslow or other) is shown in brackets with the date it was published.
Links: Links to, and into, other websites containing information relevant to the topic of the section or page. To help you distinguish between the different types that you might see on a page, many of them are arranged in groups. The group names are near the top of the page with quick links down to each group.

Can't Find Something on the Site?

Look on the "Search" page accessed from the left-hand navigation column (at the top). Type in a key word or phrase. You will then see a Results page containing your key words. Clicking on a title will take you to that material. Your key words are highlighted, both on the Results page and also on any HVEC page you go to. You can also search for a Contact by surname or job title.

On the same page there is a dynamic A-Z index on HVEC to make finding things easier. This "Site Index" shows you what is available on your site under the headings HVEC Pages, Documents, Best Practice and Updates.

Finally on that page you can access A-Z lists of Documents and Links. The Document list is also on the "Documents/Forms" page accessed from the left-hand navigation column (towards the bottom).

There is a "Site Map" also accessible from the left-hand navigation column (at the top). This shows a complete list of pages in the site grouped together in their sections.

If you still can't find what you are looking for, please e-mail the HVEC Webmaster.

Bookmarking Pages in HVEC

If there are pages that you visit frequently, you might wish to save the links to them.

Right click in the page (not at the top or the left of the screen) and choose 'Create Shortcut'. This will be placed on your desktop and can be moved from there if you wish. Please note that when you use the shortcut, you will not see the left navigation column.

HVEC News Items

To keep HVEC users up-to-date, the website carries items of current information that you can access in several ways. An item relevant to a specific page appears at the top of that page. All the items are gathered together on the "New on HVEC" page (accessed from the Whats New section). They stay on the website for thirty days unless obsolete before then.

On-line Discussion Forums (Partners Site only)

There are separate Forums for every subject, governors, headteachers and different groups of teachers. Use them to seek or share information. The "Forums" page can be accessed from the left-hand navigation column (towards the bottom).
