Hounslow Language Service provides specialist staff who work alongside school staff to help bilingual pupils develop their English and succeed in school subjects. The Mother-tongue section also helps pupils maintain and develop their first language skills.

Aims

The aim of the service is to provide schools with support for several key areas of work:
• Raising the attainment of EAL minority ethnic pupils
• Maintaining a database of EAL pupil progress, highlighting those pupils at risk of under-achievement
• Meeting the requirement for schools to set targets linked to performance for pupils from minority ethnic groups.
• Ensuring inclusion and access for EAL minority ethnic pupils.
• Meeting the schools’ duties under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000
• Responding to the recommendations of the Lawrence Inquiry

Hounslow schools buy into a range of teaching and language assistant posts according to their school needs and the formula agreed with the HLS Headteachers' Steering Group.
